There are books that redefine a genre. Better Off Wet turns the fishing memoir into a meditation on the absurdity of the importance attributed to enjoyment. It recounts the fifteen year quest to catch a trout in a small stream in Pennsylvania that has become hallowed ground among a group of quiet, but obsessed fly anglers. The journey starts in the literary "brat pack" and halcyon days of New York publishing, the era of Wall Street "Masters of the Universe." The journey continues to the West Coast, San Francisco in the 90's, Silicon Valley in the new millennium. It looks at media moguls, venture capitalists, artists, and regular people too -- all from a safe distance. Critics call it laugh out loud funny. Readers claim to have enjoyed it on numerous occasions.
Better Off Wet 49 Life Lessons Through Fishing eBook Keith Foxe
In my early childhood 1970's home, we had two signs on the wall: "Poverty is Not a Crime" and "Patience is a Virtue." To read Keith Foxe's opening lesson on the reward of patience brought me back to the lesson: that to live life to the fullest and to reap its benefits, one must possess the virtue of patience and to know the greatest moments of creating are those found in the gap. Wait and all shall be revealed in due time.I am not a fisher woman, but I can appreciate the Zen art mastery of fishing. I did it as a child growing up in summers spent in Mammoth Lakes. I love to cast for fish and to even catch it, so I can appreciate all it takes to bring 'pond to table' or 'ocean to table,' or more truly, 'hook to table.' In "Better off Wet: 49 Life Lessons Through Fishing" - Keith Foxe wades with us through the ever changing tides of life. While you are waiting for your bait to be bitten, you can learn something. Don't let a moment go to waste. The ultimate multi-task experience - have a quiet, meditative moment and change the world somehow - your own and the larger one we share.
I laughed out loud at several passages, Foxe's writing is engaging, sensory, visually hilarious. His in-depth journal of his fishing adventures and statistics are informative to those who can easily treat this as a fishing travel guide book. But it is much more than that. One of my favorite passages reads: "In a way you are a fishing evangelist -- you view yourself not just as some dandy gracefully whipping colored line through rural air, but as a steward of the environment and a keeper of old traditions."
There are far more amusing quotes and more statistical ones, but it is the recounting of Keith's adventures up and down the East and West coasts, wading through rural waters, rivers and streams that is the journey itself. To have a goal, to experience the adventure of meeting it with excitement and wonder, and to know when to move on to the next. Life is about creating and recording our journeys. To meet extraordinary people along the way, to have a survival test here and there and to ultimately share the wisdoms and experiences collected so someone else might be inspired and encouraged to do the same. On the surface, this is a book about fishing, but it is far more than that. I grew up in the City of Los Angeles, our streams were gushing gutters on a rare rainstorm, or maybe we hopped the fence around Lake Hollywood and trespassed by famous people's houses for outback adventures, fishing is what older men did off the Santa Monica Pier. "Better Off Wet" if nothing else is a lovely trip through valleys, rivers, streams and countryside that us city birds never got to fly in, let alone fly fish in. It's majestic and funny. It's a bit of history. Read this book and learn something new. Simple and sage.

Better Off Wet 49 Life Lessons Through Fishing eBook Keith Foxe Reviews
Like many anglers I find my time on the water helps me focus, relax and look inward, and in many ways reading this book took me streamside. Like I was along for the ride with Keith on one of his fishing adventures. Keith's passion for fishing is clear and the openness in which he shares and relates his life experiences makes for a compelling adventure for the reader. Recommended for any fan of the outdoors and fishing, but also for those who are sensitive, introspective, and spiritual.
A really good fisherman's read, full of personal experiences and wise counsel regarding the way of the trout. Lessons through someone else's eyes are not always rewarding, but these were. I really enjoyed their lessons as well as the author's style. I am glad I went for the ride.
Some of the concepts are pure tripe.
Great read. I keep it on my iphone and read it every time I'm stuck someplace at the doctor's, at the airport, any dead time. It's always fresh no matter when I pick it up. I'll be very sorry when I finish it.
The author's obvious distaste for any culture other than his own Northeastern upbringing is obvious from the very beginning. I kept asking myself, "If he hates these places so much, why does he go there?". And while the work purports to be about Fishing, he misses the point of why most reasonable men and women fish. He needs to understand that it is not about the fish, it is about the fishing. If all we wanted was fish, we would go to Kroger. Adding to all that is very poor proof-reading with glaring mistakes that stop whatever thought process is happening to figure out what word is out-of-place. i.e. - one passage reads "lost of riffles" which should read "lots of riffles". In all I feel rather sorry for Mr. Foxe, as he really misses the beauty of the places and the art of fishing.
Something that struck me in this book was the brutal honesty of the day's log. I wonder how many times we've had a wonderful day on the stream but have the sum of the log read "caught one 8" brownie". The honesty extended deep in to the book and into Keiths's personal life that was extremely refreshing, especially in these days where truth seems to be in rare commodity. We cast our own bamboo rod (and justified why) right along with Keith as he explores and tries to find himself in the act of flyfishing. The early release is re-pleat with annoying typos and missing words but that did not distract and only confirmed Keith as a kindred human soul. Keith is the kind of guy you would want to spend the day on the creek with and a nice cool one in town afterwards. A good read that I enjoyed. Thanks Keith, if ever in Colorado, I'll show you around.
After catching his first bluegill at the age of three, Keith Foxe has spent his life casting into the streams, ponds, and brooks from coast to coast. In this fishing memoir, he re-examines his old fishing journal that spans decades. Through it, he gleans relevant life lessons. Some lessons are simple “If you want to achieve a goal, write it down.” Some are more profound “Avoid the romance of noble failure.”
Part autobiography, part spiritual discourse, Better Off Wet kept me hooked from beginning to end. With refreshing candidness, Foxe opens up about his life experiences, from the highly-competitive world of New York publishing, to his childhood in New England, to his love of the California wilderness, to a failed marriage. He recounts advice he’s received through the years from mentors, fishing legends, and authors, thinkers, and spiritual leaders such as Peter Senge, Gurdjieff, and the Buddha.
Even though I’m not a fisherman, I really enjoyed taking the journey this book offers. It’s witty yet meaningful, esoteric yet accessible.
